CARLS WAINEINA
CARLS WAINEINA
TREK LEADER

Carls is our main coordinator and trek leader in Kenya, and a director of Wandering Nomads. His flexibility at taking on a variety of roles depending on the involvement you wish us to have is of great value. Interpreter, negotiator, driver, master mechanic, guide, cook – you name it he can do it.

Carls was born and raised in Samburu district. From a mixed tribal union (Samburu & Kikuyu), he gained an ability from an early age to interact with the many different tribes bordering this district, and this, combined with a passion for the vast semi desert plains and volcanic landscapes that embody the Turkana / Samburu district mean he is a mine of experience and knowledge of the area.

Carls’ prime goal and motivation for Wandering Nomads lies in the empowerment of his own people – a diverse amalgam of tribes who live in a region that has by and large been forgotten by the outside world. He sees Wandering Nomads as a vehicle that goes a little way to achieving this goal, so please bear this in mind if you decide to come along.

Respect his judgement, he knows what he’s doing.

DAN HOLLOWAY
DAN HOLLOWAY
CEO

Dan will be your first port of call should you be inspired by the idea of Wandering Nomads. He will be able to point you in the right direction prior to deciding on a trek, offering advice regarding the most suitable itinerary, equipment to take and arrangements to make before departure.

With over 30 years trekking experience in the Northern Frontier District of Kenya Dan, with initial assistance from the renowned explorer Wilfred Thesiger has established and fostered a trust with the many nomadic people who have accompanied him on his walks. Tapping into this reservoir of knowledge and drawing on the inspiration and help Wilfred gave him in the early years has enabled Dan to explore some new uncharted routes, satisfying his desire for a greater understanding of the nomadic culture that thrives here. A chance meeting with Carls Waineina during one of these walks helped plant the seed of what has now become Wandering Nomads.

Based in the U.K. Dan administers the enterprise liasing closely between Carls in Kenya and potential clients wishing to take a trek. If you want to know more please feel to drop him an email.

What People Are Saying

“I travelled with Wandering Nomads to Mount Nyeru, via South Horr. The trip was memorable, and we saw every aspect of Kenya. Dan and Carls’ greatest strength is their knowledge of the local people. Nowhere is off limits, and everyone is their friend. It meant that we were welcome everywhere.”

Adam, London

“It’s difficult for us to explain to our friends what we have lived during this 4 weeks, if they can understand what we saw, they can not really understand what we felt. It was a real pleasure to live with you during all this time, you have really done what to do to make us love your country, and you have succeeded!”

Doctor Gilles and Logipi-Brigitte, France

“Special thanks goes to Carls Waineina from Wandering Nomads who managed to take me to places “normal people” usually don’t have access to and managed to keep us alive all the trip along. Thanks a lot Carls!”

David Lacina, Norway
